Even before entering Ojas, you can detect the refreshing and inviting aromas of the therapeutic essential oils wafting down the hall. Step up to the 100% organic aromatherapy counter where you can sample single notes or medicinal blends, and get personal recommendations for your specific needs.

What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are highly potent extractions of the aromatic oils from plants such as the oil from lemon or orange rinds which many of us are familiar with. But many different parts of plants, such as the roots, leaves, seeds, and bark can contain essential oils.

Unlike vegetable oils such as olive or sunflower which are thick and greasy, essential oils feel more like water and are called “volatile oils”, because they evaporate like water if left open to the air. Because of the small size of the aromatic molecules, essential oils are readily absorbed by the human body through inhalation or application to the skin.

What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to support emotional and physical health. Essential oils can be used by inhalation (directly or with a specialized diffuser), or topically (spot treatment, massage, bath, or compress).  Some essential oils can also be ingested with proper professional supervision.

How can a good smell be good for you?
Each essential oil contains dozens of chemical components that work synergistically to create specific effects in the body and mind. Many essential oils for instance have strong antibacterial, antiviral, or anti-fungal properties which makes them useful for colds, infections, and wounds. Inhalation of essential oils brings their unique aromatic components directly to the limbic system of the brain which is where emotions, memory, and hormonal functions are controlled. Thus essential oils have emotional and psychological benefits, especially for those suffering from chronic stress symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, and depression.

Although essential oils are naturally occurring substances, they are highly concentrated products that should be used upon recommendation of a trained professional. People with asthma, epilepsy, high blood pressure or who are pregnant or nursing should be especially careful and always consult a health care provider before using essential oils.

What is the difference between perfume and an essential oil?
The majority of common commercial products today that claim to be “aromatherapy” such as air fresheners and laundry detergents use synthetic scents and/or low quality adulterated essential oils which do not have medicinal value and can actually have harmful, rather than healthful effects.

What else can essential oils be used for?
Therapeutic essential oils can be used for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to: Acne, Aging skin, Colds, Depression, Digestive health, Dosha balancing, Eczema, First aid, Grief, Household cleaning, Infections, Injuries, Insomnia, Meditation, Menopause, Muscle tension, PMS, Sprains, Stress…

For instance, the pure essential oil of peppermint (Mentha piperita) tends to have cooling and anti-inflammatory effects on the body, and is useful in easing the pain of injuries. When inhaled, it has a refreshing and uplifting effect on the mind, and clears congestion. Among dozens of other applications, Peppermint Essential Oil can also be used to improve concentration, reduce appetite, soothe digestive tract inflammation, and repel insects.

Her education in the healing arts is supported by a foundation of pre-medical studies in biology, physiology, anatomy, and chemistry.

Upon her introduction to essential oils in 2001, she was struck by the potency, efficiency and immediate results that essential oils offered compared to other herbal/plant preparations. They quickly became her primary source of natural medicine and focus of study, leading her to complete a 2-year Certificate of Holistic Aromatherapy in 2007.
